I'm an Accredited Clinical Safety Officer with over 14 years of experience in the NHS, spanning frontline nursing, clinical informatics, and digital safety assurance. My journey began in direct patient care — first as a healthcare assistant and then as a registered nurse in medical, surgical, and community settings — where I developed a deep understanding of patient needs and multidisciplinary teamwork.

My interest in digital transformation led me into clinical informatics, where I joined a Trust's Digital Nursing team. I supported staff in adopting systems like Nervecentre and Lorenzo, and played a key role in delivering digital projects aligned with organisational strategy — always keeping patient safety at the heart of the work.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I helped set up a large-scale vaccination clinic, managing everything from staff training to service coordination — an experience that sharpened my ability to deliver under pressure in complex, fast-moving environments.

Since then, I've specialised in clinical safety and assurance. I've worked on a wide range of DCB0160 and DCB0129-compliant deployments, from Shared Care Records and Electronic Prescribing to Robotic Process Automation and national APIs — supporting both NHS organisations and private health IT developers through the complexities of clinical risk management, hazard analysis, and digital system assurance.

Today, I run SJR Clinical Safety, providing consultancy services to NHS and private sector partners. My work is rooted in a strong clinical foundation, a passion for safe digital transformation, and a practical understanding of how technology can support both clinicians and patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about clinical safety compliance, our services, and how we work.

DCB0129 is a UK clinical safety standard that applies to manufacturers and developers of health IT systems. If you're building software that is used in the diagnosis, treatment, or monitoring of patients, DCB0129 requires you to have a qualified Clinical Safety Officer, produce a Clinical Risk Management Plan, and maintain a Hazard Log. It applies to digital health startups, NHS system suppliers, and private health technology companies alike.
DCB0160 applies to NHS organisations and other health and social care providers that deploy or modify health IT systems — rather than those who build them. Where DCB0129 is the manufacturer's obligation, DCB0160 is the deploying organisation's. In many projects both standards apply simultaneously, and SJR Clinical Safety can support compliance with both from a single engagement.
Yes — if your product handles patient data or supports clinical decision-making, DCB0129 requires a Clinical Safety Officer regardless of company size. Many startups don't have the resource to hire a full-time CSO in-house, which is exactly why an outsourced or fractional CSO service like ours is ideal. You get experienced, accredited clinical safety support without the overhead of a permanent hire.
A Clinical Safety Case Report is a structured document that presents the evidence and argument that a health IT system is acceptably safe for its intended use in a specific deployment context. It summarises the hazard identification process, risk assessments, mitigation controls, and residual risks. It is a key deliverable under both DCB0129 and DCB0160 and is often required during procurement, go-live approval, or regulatory review.
The Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) is a framework used by NHS England to assess digital health technologies before they can be procured or deployed by NHS organisations. It covers clinical safety, data protection, technical security, interoperability, and accessibility. Clinical safety — including DCB0129 and DCB0160 — is a core component of DTAC, and we can support you in preparing the clinical safety evidence required for a successful DTAC assessment.
Timelines vary depending on the complexity of your system and the maturity of your existing documentation. For a straightforward product with good existing technical documentation, we can typically produce initial compliance documentation within 4–8 weeks. More complex systems or those with significant hazard profiles may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline during our initial conversation.
Absolutely. Clinical safety doesn't end at go-live — ongoing assurance is a requirement of both DCB0129 and DCB0160. We provide post-go-live clinical assurance reviews, support for system updates and change control, incident and near-miss review, and retained CSO services for organisations that need continuous clinical safety oversight.
Yes. We work with the full range of health and social care organisations — including private hospitals, BUPA, Nuffield Health, care homes, dental practices, and charity-run services. Clinical safety standards apply across all healthcare settings, and our experience spans both NHS and independent sector deployments.
